Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL/) scored a hat trick as the third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team built up a 4-0 lead in an 8-3 win over UW-Superior on Saturday night at K.B. Willett Arena.

D'Avolio scored a goal in each period and
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) added a career-high five points for the Pointers (14-2-2, 3-2-1 WIAC). Sharkey scored twice and recorded three assists for UWSP, who scored seven times over the final two periods.
D'Avolio got the scoring started with the only goal of the first period on the power play.
UW-Stevens Point then built up a 4-0 lead on second-period goals from
Drew Graves (Allen Park, MI/Allen Park ),
Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) and D'Avolio's second.
Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) extended his point streak to five games with two second-period assists.
After pulling goalie Drew Strandberg in favor of Zach Thompson, UW-Superior (6-10-3, 1-3-2 WIAC) bounced back by scoring the next two goals of the game to get within two goals at 4-2. Sharkey then got the UWSP lead back up to 5-2 at 15:38 of the second period but Pat Dalbec scored 31 seconds later to cut the deficit to two again.
After the seven-goal second period, UW-Stevens Point did all the scoring in the third. Sharkey scored his second of the night before D'Avolio completed his hat trick and
Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton) finished the scoring with 39 seconds to play.
Ladd had a three-point night, finishing with a goal and two assists and Graves added an assist to his first goal of the season.
The Yellowjackets outshot the Pointers 37-30 in the game.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made double-double saves in each period and finished with 34 saves in the win. Strandberg made 15 saves in 30:29 and Zach Thompson kept out seven in 29:31 for UW-Superior.
UW-Stevens Point was 1-for-4 on the power play, while UW-Superior was 0-for-4.
The Pointers head to St. Paul to face Bethel on Saturday, February 1 at 7 p.m.
