Penalty kill helps second-ranked men's hockey blank UW-River Falls

Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. – One goal in each period was more than enough for the No. 2 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team, as the Pointers blanked No. 13/14 UW-River Falls 3-0 on Friday night at Hunt Arena.

The Pointers (13-1-1, 2-1-0 WIAC) got goals from Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem), Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL/) and Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) in the game but the story of the game was the fourth-ranked UWSP penalty kill, which held the Falcons (9-4-2, 2-1-0 WIAC) to 0-for-8 on the power play. UWSP was 2-for-6 with the man advantage in the game, which saw 18 penalties called.
 
Cornellier got the scoring started at 1:39 of the first period on assists from Kevin Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI/North) and Kyle Brodie (Denver, CO/Northglenn). UWSP outshot UWRF 11-7 in the opening period.
 
Midway through the second period, the Pointers doubled their lead with their first power-play goal of the night courtesy of Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL/). Drew Graves (Allen Park, MI/Allen Park ) and Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) picked up assists on the goal at 9:05. The assist was the third in four games for Graves.
 
Both teams committed four penalties in the third period but Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) scored the lone goal of the period at 2:47. Sharkey's goal was also on the power play, with Brodie picking up his second assist of the night and his ninth of the season.
 
Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton)'s nine-game point streak came to an end for the Pointers but the nation's third-leading scorer nearly extended it but his second-period shot hit the pipe. The Pointers remain unbeaten (3-0-1) against ranked teams this season.
 
UW-Stevens Point outshot UW-River Falls 27-23 in the game. Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made 23 saves to record his third shutout of the season.
 
The two teams meet on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Hunt Arena with the Pointers looking to finish off a weekend sweep.
