Winning streak for men's hockey comes to an end against UW-Stout

Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 2 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team saw its season-opening nine-game winning streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday night at K.B. Willett Arena.

The Pointers (9-1, 1-1 WIAC) led 1-0 early before the Blue Devils (3-7, 1-1 WIAC) scored the game's next three goals to lead 3-1 in the third period. UWSP got a late power-play goal from Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) with just over two minutes remaining but could not find the game-tying goal.

UW-Stevens Point outshot UW-Stout 61-17 in the game but Stout's Corey Koop made 59 saves to hold the Pointers to two goals. The two goals are tied for the fewest the Pointers have scored in a game this season.

Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL/) gave UWSP an early 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season. D'Avolio's goal came at the 6:30 mark and was assisted by Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC/). The Pointers outshot the Blue Devils 21-3 in the opening period but Koop's 20 saves kept the score at 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the later stages of the second period when Kevin O'Donnell's goal evened matters at 1-1. Midway through the third period UW-Stout took a 2-1 lead after a goal by Hunter Scott.

The Blue Devils made it 3-1 two and a half minutes later at 11:43 of the third period. Zach Vierling finished off a 4-on-2 break for UW-Stout to give the Pointers their first two-goal deficit of the season.

Kalisz's sixth goal of the season gave the Pointers a chance to tie the game in the final two minutes but Koop made saves on Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) and Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI/Fenton) as the Blue Devils closed out the victory.

UW-Stevens Point will look to bounce back from its first loss of the season on Friday, December 13 when Lawrence pays a visit to K.B. Willett Arena at 7 p.m.
