Beau's sneak lifts Pointers to overtime win at UW-Eau Claire

Box Score EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) scored a game-winning one-yard touchdown after a UW-Eau Claire turnover to send the UW-Stevens Point football team to a 23-17 overtime win on Saturday at Carson Park.

UWSP (4-1, 2-0 WIAC) led 17-7 heading to the fourth quarter but the Blugolds (0-5, 0-2 WIAC) came back to send the game to overtime. However, Jake Bedor (Shiocton, WI/Shiocton) picked off a pass by UW-Eau Claire's Mark Munger on the first series of overtime before Beau capped a four-play 25-yard drive with his second one-yard touchdown of the game. The Pointers are 2-0 in the WIAC for the first time since 2009.

Beau's first rushing touchdown of the game gave the Pointers a 17-7 lead with two seconds left in the third quarter after a 15-play, 79-yard drive.. The Blugolds responded and sent the game to overtime after Clint Larsen's 16-yard touchdown run with 1:11 remaining. Larsen rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns on eight rushes.

Earlier, Larsen had given UWEC a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter with a 26-yard scoring run. Alex Wallace (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) hauled in his first touchdown of the season off a 4-yard pass from Beau 3:30 before halftime to tie the game at 7-7. Wallace was a key part of the UWSP passing attack with six catches for 51 yards and the score.

In addition to his two rushing touchdowns, Beau was 22-for-35 passing with his lone touchdown going to Wallace. Ian Neville (Waukegan, IL/St. Joseph Catholic Academy) led UW-Stevens with 88 rushing yards on 24 carries. Logan Taylor (Wausau, WI/Wausau East) was Beau's favorite target with 70 yards on six catches.

The UWSP defense held Joel Sweeney, the WIAC's leading rusher entering the game at 143.0 yards per game, to 90 yards on 26 carries. The Pointers defense also picked off Munger twice, including Bedor's interception in overtime.

Cody Seibel (Kewaskum, WI/Kewaskum) was in on a game-high 14 tackles for UW-Stevens Point. Mike Longmeyer (Manitowoc, WI/Lincoln) had seven solo tackles and forced a fumble. Bo Seibel (Kewaskum, WI/Kewaskum) had the other UWSP interception.

The Pointers host UW-Platteville on Saturday at 2 pm in a battle of teams that are 2-0 in the WIAC. The Pioneers defeated UW-River Falls 49-7 this afternoon.
