Matt Moses (Fond du Lac) knocked down two free throws with 6.1 seconds left to survive a scare from Carleton College as the Pointers came out with a 59-58 victory on Friday evening advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament.
Louis Hurd (Portage) and Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna) jump started the Pointers offense, each scoring six points in the opening five minutes of the game giving the Pointers an early 14-5 advantage.
The Pointers were able to control the paint scoring 18 of their 24 first half points inside while holding the Knights to just eight.
With 4:01 left in the first half Moses gave the Pointers their biggest lead of the game at 11 with a jumper set up by Jerrel Harris (Whitefish Bay). The Pointers were able to take a 32-24 lead into half time.
The Knights came out in the second half firing and were able to tie up the game at 40 with 13:26 remaining and were able to take a two point lead on three occasions. They were also able to work the ball in the post better in the second half outscoring Point 22-12 in the paint.
With 37 seconds remaining Moses set up Hurd for his biggest shot of the game and he came through drilling a three pointer putting the Pointers up by one at 57-56. Seth Jonker was able to gather an offensive rebound and scored on a put back giving the Knights a one point advantage.
The Pointers then put the ball in senior Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs)'s hands and let him drive to the hoop drawing a foul on Jonker. Moses stepped up to the line and calmly hit both of his free throws, giving the Pointers a 59-58 advantage.
Carleton's Jeremy Sutherland attempted to drive the length of the court but excellent defense by Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) resulted in a steal from Harris and the Pointers came away with a one point victory.
Hurd led the Pointers on the evening with 19 points while Moses helped with 16 and Jenkins added 10. Ross Forman (Minneapolis, MN) led all players with seven rebounds.
The Knights were led by Jonker with 17, Suterland with 13, Bryan Rosett with 12 and Carter Biewen with 11.
UW-Stevens Point (24-4) will now face off against St. Norbert on Saturday evening on Bennett Court in Quandt Fieldhouse in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
