WHITEWATER – The Pointer men's basketball team made it a clean sweep of UW-Whitewater on Saturday evening, posting a 63-57 victory to capture back-to-back tournament titles and earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
NCAA tournament pairings will be announced on Monday.
The tournament title is the league-leading sixth for the Pointers, who were the defending tournament champions, defeating UW-Platteville in Stevens Point last season.
Scoreless for the first 5:39 of the opening half, UW-Whitewater took the 3-0 lead at the 14:21 mark off a Dupree Fletcher three-pointer. The remainder of the first half, the teams battled back-and-forth, trading the lead five times down the stretch until Stevens Point took the lead into the halftime locker room, 24-21.
In the second half, the Pointers pushed the lead to 12, 44-32, with 9:52 remaining and kept the lead at near double digits for much of the second stanza. Whitewater cut their deficit to just three, 60-57 but
Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) put back a
Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) miss to push the advantage back to five and a late
Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) free-throw pushed the advantage to six.
A late flurry of three-pointers by the Warhawks missed their mark, as the Pointers secured the victory.
Moses led the way with 16 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor while Hurd added 12.
Jerrel Harris (Milwaukee/Dominican) and
Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) each added 10. Moses also finished as the Pointers leading rebounder, collecting seven.
Whitewater's Dupree Fletcher led all scorers with 25 points.
