Pointers Soar Past Eagles

STEVENS POINT - The Pointer men's basketball team held UW-La Crosse to just 36.5 percent shooting for the game on Saturday afternoon (19-52) and allowed just three made three-pointers, as second-ranked UW-Stevens Point defeated 23rd-ranked UW-La Crosse 73-57.

After a back-and-forth few opening minutes, UW-La Crosse built a five point lead, 16-11, midway through the game's opening half, putting in jeopardy the Pointers five-game win streak. But UW-Stevens Point responded, retaking the lead and building a nine point advantage of their own, 34-25, with just under five minutes remaining in the half, and took a five point edge, 38-33, into the halftime locker room.


In the second half, the Pointer defense shut down the Eagle offense, holding the visitors to just 24 second-half points, jumping in front by as many as 22 down the stretch as the Pointers cruised to the 16 point victory.

The Pointers held UW-L's Tony Mane, the WIAC's leading scorer, to just 11 points on the evening, none in the second half, as the Pointers kept the normally hot-shooting Eagles to just 19 made field goals, seven in the second half.

Matt Moses (Fond du Lac) led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting on the night while Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) chipped in 17 points and added six rebounds. Senior transfer Ross Forman (Minneapolis, MN) led the Pointers with seven rebounds and added eight points in 22 minutes. Jordan Brezinski (Muskego) came off the bench to finish as the third Pointer in double figures, scoring 13 points.

Mane led the Eagles with 11 points while Al Chery chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. Jordan Rumpel led UW-L with seven rebounds.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 13 when they host UW-Platteville in action scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bennett Court in Quandt Fieldhouse.
