Pointers Push Past Blugolds

EAU CLAIRE - All five starters scored in double figures on Wednesday evening as the top-ranked Pointer men's basketball team collected a 74-68 win over the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire at Zorn Arena, extending UW-Stevens Point's winning streak to 19 straight over UW-Eau Claire.

Both teams built narrow leads in the game's opening half, but neither team was able to pull in front by more than four points. Just before the half, UW-Stevens Point began to pull away, closing out the half on a 6-0 run to pull in front 29-25.

In the second, the Pointers opened on a 5-0 run to go in front by 11, 39-27, with 17:45 remaining. Eau Claire chipped away at the Pointer lead, cutting their deficit to just one, 44-43, near the 13 minute mark, but the Pointers responded, pushing the lead back to double digits with just over five minutes remaining. Ahead by 12 with just under three minutes remaining, the Pointers were able to hold off a late Blugolds charge, taking the 74-68 victory.

Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) led the way with 17 points while Louis Hurd (Portage) finished with 13, Scott Hoelzel finished with 12 and Matt Moses (Fond du Lac) and Nick Krull (Marshall) each chipped in with 11. Hoelzel led the way with eight rebounds while Hurd added six assists.

Eau Claire's Goeff Probst led the Blugolds with 17 points while Amadou Fofana had 16.

UW-Stevens Point (16-1, 7-1 WIAC) returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 23 when they travel to UW-Oshkosh for a 3 p.m. match-up with the Titans.
