Men's Basketball 1/13/2010 9:36:00 PM Pointers Cruise Past Pioneers by Sports Information Assistant Chris Johnson Box Score STEVENS POINT-The UW-Stevens Point (14-1, 5-1 WIAC) men's basketball team used superb shooting and stifling defense to easily defeat the UW-Platteville Pioneers 74-53 at the Quandt Fieldhouse on Bennett Court Wednesday evening. After a slow start, the Pointers went on a 21-0 run from 9:29 until 1:52 left in the first half to go up 40-17 at the break and give the Pioneers no chance of a comeback. Stevens Point held Platteville to just 27 percent shooting in the first half while the Pointers shot 63 percent. The Pioneers defense stepped up in the second half and made it an even battle, coming within 16 points with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but the Pointers stepped up with a 7-2 run to close out the game, sealing the victory. Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) led all scorers with 20 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Louis Hurd (Portage) added 15 points and led the Pointers with eight rebounds. Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna) chipped in with nine points and a team-high four assists. Curt Hanson and Shane Kieler each had 17 points for the Pioneers. Rob Stallion led Platteville with five rebounds. The Pointers hit the road for a game at UW-Superior on Saturday, January 16, scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip-off. Print Friendly Version
