STEVENS POINT - The Pointers used 45 first-half points and never looked back as they cruised to an 83-58 victory over the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior 83-58 Saturday evening at Berg Gym.
It was all UWSP from the start as they jumped out to a quick 12-1 lead. They extended that lead to 27-8 halfway through the first stanza.
The Pointers continued their scoring barrage, as they went on a 15-4 run to extend the lead to 27 points at 42-15 with 3:41 to go in the first half. The Yellowjackets made a couple quick buckets near the end of the first half, but saw themselves trailing 45-23 heading into the locker room.
Superior put up a quick run to open the second frame which cut the lead to 56-40 with 14:32 showing on the clock.
That was the closest the Yellowjackets would get the rest of the way, as the Pointers put them away down the stretch en route to the 25 point victory.
The second-ranked Pointers (19-2, 11-1 WIAC) were led by
Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest)'s (Sun Prairie) 24 points.
Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) (Plover) chipped 18 points and
Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Mineral Point) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Yellowjackets (4-17, 0-13 WIAC) were led by Hailey Hart who scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Bri Davis scored 10 points and added seven rebounds in the defeat.
In their next matchup, the Pointers will travel to take on No. 5 UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.
