Box Score

STEVENS POINT – On a day chosen to honor two Pointer greats, former coaches Dick and Jack Bennett, the Pointers delivered with a performance that had a bit of what both coaches were best known for in their careers.

A low scoring first half in which both the UW-Superior and UW-Stevens Point defenses' held each other to 36 and 42 percent respectively as the Pointers slowly worked their way to a 33-23 halftime lead, sparked in part by 18 first-half points from Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Portage)who was 8-for-10 from the floor in the opening stanza.

In the second half, the Pointer offense kicked in, shooting just 40 percent but controlling the tempo en route to a 36-point performance and pulling away for the 19-point victory over the visiting Yellowjackts.

Leading the way for UWSP was Hurd, who added seven points to his first half performance to finish with 25 points including 10-15 from the floor and also pulled down seven rebounds. Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (Fond du Lac) added seven points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds while Nick Krull (Marshall/Marshall) (Marshall) recorded eight points and seven boards in 21 minutes off the bench.

For Superior, Jake Smith (Rhinelander) led the way with 16 points in the loss.

The Pointers improve to 19-2 overall and stay perfect in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Superior falls to 10-12 overall, 3-10 in WIAC play.

At halftime, the logo which will be permanently placed on the court was unveiled to a crown of 2,000-plus as the floor inside Quandt Fieldhouse will be named after Dick and Jack Bennett. Both coaches spent nine years of their careers in Stevens Point, Dick at the start of his college coaching career and Jack the last nine of his. Together they boast 373 wins in Pointer history.

“Thank you so much for making this a wonderful day,” said Dick Bennett to the crowd. “It is a tribute to the young men, coaches and fans who were so important and so good in those days.”

“No one could say it better than Lou Gehrig,” said Jack Bennett. “He simply said 'Today, I'm the luckiest man on the face of the earth.' Today, Dick and I are the luckiest guys.”
