Pointers Skate Past No. 2 Saints 4-1

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. - St. Scholastica scored at the 10:53 mark of the first period but the Pointers answered with four goals of their own to defeat the nation's second-ranked team 4-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) men's hockey action Friday evening.

The win snaps a 14-game unbeaten streak for the Saints.

The Saint's Joey Martin struck first for St. Scholastica (17-4-2, 8-3-1 NCHA), scoring his 12th goal of the season off an AJ Tucker and Jeremy Dawes pass to take the early lead.

UW-Stevens Point, looking to rebound two losses last weekend, struck back before the end of the first period, as Reed Lally (Duluth, MN/East) (Duluth, Minn.) scored just his third goal of the season off a Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn.) and Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) (Anoka, Minn.) pass, tying the score at 1-1 after the first.

The Pointers stayed hot, scoring twice in the first minute of the second, as Nic Polaski (Delafield/Wasson) (Delafield) and Taylor Guay (Boulder, CO/Boulder) (Boulder, Colo.) each tallied their third goals of the season to give the Pointers the 3-1 advantage. From there, the Pointer defense put the clamps on the high-powered Saint offense, taking their lead into the third.

In the third, Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Madison) joined the goal party, scoring his sixth goal of the season off a Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) (Brighton, Mich.) assist to seal the 4-1 victory for the Pointers.

Thomas Spear (Janesville) tallied 35 saves in net for the Pointers, earning his ninth win of the season.

UW-Stevens Point (14-7-2, 5-6-1 NCHA) returns to action tomorrow night in the second game of their northern road trip, as they head to UW-Superior for a 7 p.m. match-up with the No. 3 ranked Yellowjackets.
