Blue Devils Upset Pointers 67-64

STEVENS POINT - UW-Stout's Julia Hirssig tied a career high as she poured in 37 points including two free-throws with nine seconds remaining to give Stout the lead, as the Blue Devils upset the second-ranked Pointers 67-64 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action Wednesday evening.

The win by the Blue Devils is their first in Stevens Point since Dec. 8, 2001. The loss by the Pointers snaps a school-record 14-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 3.

Down by as many as 13 in the first half, the Pointers took their first lead of the game at the 11:39 mark of the second half, thanks to an Andrea Flease (New London/New London) (New London) jumper, giving UWSP the 47-46 edge.

Stout retook the lead, 50-47 thanks to a pair of Hirssig layups before UWSP used a 13-4 run to take their largest lead of the night, 60-54, with 5:16 remaining.

Point held their six point lead until 2:39 remaining when the Blue Devils connected on consecutive layups to cut the deficit to one, 64-63 with just 1:00 remaining. After a missed free-throw with :09 left, a Pointer foul sent Hirssig to the line with the clock stopped where she connected on both attempts, giving Stout the 65-64 lead. A last-second shot from Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) (Plover) missed its mark and a final pair of free-throws with under a second left gave the Blue Devils the 67-64 victory.

On the night, the Pointers shot 40.9 percent from the floor and were outrebounded by the Blue Devils 46-34.

For UWSP, Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) (Luck) led the way with 16 points on 8-of-17 shooting and added nine rebounds and two blocks in the loss. Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Mineral Point) added 13 points and chipped in six rebounds while Janelle Van Gomple (DeForest) added 13 points and nine boards to round out the scorers in double figures.

For Stout, Hirssig added a game-high 12 rebounds to her 37-point performance while Charlee Edwards (Danbury) added 16.

UW-Stevens Point (18-2, 10-1 WIAC) returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 when they host UW-Superior in more WIAC action starting a 5 p.m.
