Russell Law (Bay City, MI, Shattuck (MN)) scored two goals and
Travis Erstad (Stevens Point, SPASH) added one of his own, all in the second period, but it was not enough as the high powered offense of the No. 11 ranked Green Knights of St. Norbert College handed No. 15 ranked UW-Stevens Point an 8-3 loss in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) playoff action Friday evening.
The defending national champion Green Knights (18-7-1) burst onto the scoreboard early in the first period, scoring just 55 seconds into the game off a Dustin Walz goal, his third of the season.
After St. Norbert another goal at the start of the second, this time off a Sam Tikka goal, UWSP got on the board as Law took a
Garrett Suter (Madison, Oregon) pass and found the back of the net, cutting the Pointer deficit to one, 2-1.
Erstad added his tenth goal of the season just over two minutes later on the power play off a pass from
Jon Madden (Brighton, MI, Howell)and
Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN, Forest Lake), knotting the score at 2-2. Fewer than three minutes later, the Law added his second goal of the game, his 16th of the season, off a
Reed Lally (Duluth, MN, East) pass, giving the Pointers their first lead of the game, 3-2.
St. Norbert came fighting back, knotting the score at 3-3, taking advantage of a Pointer penalty as Steven Pratt scored his third goal of the season for the Green Knights. Two more St. Norbert goals to close out the second put the host Green Knights ahead 5-3.
In the third, the Green Knights tallied three more goals and goaltender B.J. O'Brien stopped all five of the Pointers shots on net as St. Norbert cruised to the 8-3 victory.
Thomas Speer (Janesville, James Madison) logged just over 52 minutes in net on the evening, stopping 22 Green Knight shots while
Steve Hamilton (Stevens Point, SPASH) tallied four saves to close out the game in net.
UW-Stevens Point (15-9-2) and St. Norbert return to action on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in the second game of their best of two series in the NCHA Quarterfinals.
