Men's Swimming Defeats La Crosse, Women Fall Short

LA CROSSE - The UW-Stevens Point men's swimming and diving team posted nine first-place finishes as the Pointers swam past the Eagles of UW-La Crosse on Saturday afternoon. The women's team posted three first-place finishes but it was not enough as the Eagles handed the women's team a 145-98 loss.

On the men's side, Chase Gross (Edina, MN/) broke his own pool record in the 50 free, posting a time of 20.74. Gross also posted wins in the 100 free and was a member of the 400 free relay team that finished first by almost six seconds with a time of 3:10.78.

Other first place finishers for the men included the 400 medley relay team of Chris Hruska (Verona/Verona), Ben Schreiber (Albert Lea, MN/Albert Lea), Matt Olp (Oregon/Oregon) and Sam Davy (Stevens Point, WI/) who finished with a time of 3:35.00. Davy also posted a win in the 200 free, Josh Cagle (Grand Rapids, MN/Grand Rapids) posted a first place finish in the 1m dive and Rob Donisch (Wheaton, IL/) finished first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.23. Ian Girdley (Verona, WI/) finished with the top time in the 200 backstroke and Brent Schwartz (Waukesha/South) finished first in the 200 breaststroke.

On the women's side, Lindsay Lukes (Austin, MN/) posted the Pointers best time in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.45. Beth Ann Abraham (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) was a winner in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:23.98 and Jennifer Bussey (Ohanhassen, MN/Chaska) was a winner in the 200 breaststroke, notching a time of 2:29.68.

The Pointer swimming and diving teams are back in action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6-7 at the Minnesota Invite in Minneapolis. Friday's action begins at 6 p.m.
