Pointers Fall Just Short at Whitewater

WHITEWATER – Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) (Luck) scored a game-high 14 points but it was not enough as the Pointers suffered a 61-59 loss to the Warhawks of UW-Whitewater on Saturday evening in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's basketball action.

The Pointers jumped out to an early lead, building an 11-point lead at the 7:49 mark of the opening half, 21-10. But Whitewater closed out the first half on a 21-7 run to jump ahead by three, 31-28, heading into the locker room.

In the second, the Pointers led only once, 36-35, at the 15:35 mark, as the Warhawks continued their assault on the Pointers, scoring 12 points off seven Stevens Point turnovers and built an eight-point lead with 7:41 remaining. But the Pointers fought their way back, cutting the deficit to one, 60-59, with 1:15 remaining thanks to a Katie Webber (Reedsburg/Reedsburg) (Reedsburg) layup.

After a Warhawk free-throw with :10 remaining Whitewater had a two-point edge, 61-59. The Pointers missed on two opportunities as the clock ran out, as Whitewater escaped with the two-point victory.

Petersen added seven rebounds to her 14-point performance while Andrea Flease (New London/New London) (New London) and Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Mineral Point) each added 10 points in the loss. Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) (DeForest) chipped in nine points, six rebounds and a team-high five assists.

Kelsey Hendrickson led Whitewater with 13 points and five assists and Tiffany Morton and Heidi Sonntag each added 10 for the host Warhawks.
UW-Stevens Point (20-3, 12-2 WIAC) remains one game ahead of the Warhawks in the league standings with two games remaining for both teams.

The Pointers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18 when they host UW-La Crosse in the third annual Pink Zone game at 7 p.m. The Pointers encourage fans to wear pink to show your support for the fight against breast cancer and “Pink Out” Berg Gymnasium.
