Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) (Eagle River) tallied two goals and
Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn.),
Taylor Guay (Boulder, CO/Boulder) (Boulder, Colo.) and
Reed Lally (Duluth, MN/East) (Duluth, Minn.) each added a goal apiece as the Pointers closed out the regular-season at home with a 5-4 victory over UW-Eau Claire on Senior Night at K.B. Willett Arena.
Eau Claire struck first when Jesse Vesel scored just :43 in to give the visiting Blugolds an early 1-0 advantage. Nesper answered for the Pointers at the 3:06 mark of the first period, tying the score at one goal apiece.
Nesper struck again at the 10:17 mark for the Pointers, scoring unassisted to give the Pointers their first lead of the night, 2-1. Guay added another Pointer goal at the 11:26 mark, pushing the Stevens Point advantage to 3-1. Eau Claire added a goal of their own at the 16:37 mark of the first, cutting the visitors deficit to just one, 3-2, after the first period.
In the second, the Blugolds' Greg Patersen scored just :41 in to tie the score at 3-3 and added another goal by Tyler Romasco at the 8:29 mark to retake the lead, 4-3 midway through the period.
Fish brought the Pointers back, scoring at the 12:34 mark of the second to again tie the score and give the Pointers new life. Lally then scored the go-ahead goal at the 15:56 mark as the Pointers jumped in front 5-4.
In the third, Thomas Spear (Janesville) netted seven of his 18 saves on the night, turning away each Blugold scoring opportunity and picking up the victory, his 10th of the season between the pipes.
The Pointers (15-8-2, 6-7-1 NCHA), who secured the league's No. 5 seed in the playoffs, travel to defending national champion and No. 4 seeded St. Norbert College for an opening round playoff series beginning Friday, Feb. 20. Ticket information is available on the UW-Stevens Point website.
