Pointers Give Fans a ‘W’ in Home Opener

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (4-0) defeated the Vikings of Lawrence University (1-4) by a score of 72-53 on Bennett Court in the Quandt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening. The Pointers won their previous three games on the road by a margin of 20.3 points per game, including a sweep at the Puget Sound Tournament Classic over ranked foes Whitworth and Puget Sound.

The Pointers and Vikings battled hard in the first half, as neither team could gain an advantage over the other. The Pointers ended the first half with a 34-29 edge, shooting 44.8 percent from the floor. The Pointers were led by Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage)'s 11 points and Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) added eight.

The Vikings were led offensively in the first half by John Dekker's 11 points and Tyler Cullitan's seven points. Lawrence shot 39.1 percent from the floor in the first half.

The Vikings fought hard to get ahead of the Pointers in the second half, but every time they made a run, the Pointers had an answer. Dekker nailed a three-pointer to draw the game within six, 50-44, at the 8:13 mark, but the Pointers answered with a 7-0 run that put the game away for good.

The Pointers added another run late in the game, outscoring the Vikings 9-4 in the final minutes, making the final 72-53 Pointers.

The Pointers were led on offense by Hurd's 21 points and eight rebounds. Moses chipped in with 16 points and Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Vikings were led on offense by Dekker's 23 points and six rebounds, keeping up with his pace on the season, as he was averaging 23.0 coming into the match-up.

The Pointers return to action Saturday when they travel to Madison to take on the Edgewood College Eagles (1-2) at 7:00 p.m. in the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
