Pointers Keep Rolling With 6-3 Win

MINNEAPOLIS (1/9/09) -- Reed Lally (Duluth, MN/East) (JR, Duluth, Minn./East HS) and Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN)) (SR, Bay City, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) scored two goals apiece, and Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) collected three assists, as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point rallied for a 6-3 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Chris Johnson (JR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS), David Hines (FY, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) and Joel Sauer (SO, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) scored goals for Augsburg (3-9-0), which held a 2-1 lead after one period.

Mario Mjelleli (SO, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) and Chris Slavik (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) assisted on Johnson's goal, while J.P. Perpich (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Brett Way (SR, Grand Ledge, Mich.) assisted on Hines' goal, his first collegiate tally. Nick Guran (FY, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) assisted on Sauer's goal.

But Wisconsin-Stevens Point (11-5-0 overall) scored four straight goals, including three in a 4:54 span early in the third period, to take command of the game. In addition to Law's and Lally's two goals each, Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and Taylor Guay (Boulder, CO/Boulder) (SR, Boulder, Colo.) scored goals, and Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) (SR, Anoka, Minn.) and Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (SO, Madison, Wis./Oregon HS) had two assists apiece.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point outshot Augsburg by a 37-22 margin, including a 17-5 edge in the second period. Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) had 19 saves in goal for the Pointers, while Augsburg's Andrew Kent (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) had 31 saves, marking his seventh game in his last nine starts in which he has had 30 or more saves.

Augsburg hosts Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday (1/10) at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, while Wisconsin-Stevens Point plays at Hamline on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
