STEVENS POINT - The Pointers picked up another victory Wednesday evening as they grabbed a big lead early on and held UW-River Falls to 24 percent shooting in the first half en route to a 71-51 victory at Berg Gymnasium in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action Wednesday evening.
It was all UWSP from the start as the Pointers jumped out to an 11-1 lead five minutes into the contest. River Falls cut the lead to 13-8, but the Pointers responded by ripping off a 12-0 run and took a commanding 38-19 lead at the half.
The Falcons hung in the game as the scoreboard showed a 53-35 UWSP advantage halfway through the second frame. The Pointers went on a 17-5 run from there and cruised to their fourth WIAC victory.
The Pointers (12-1, 4-0 WIAC), ranked No. 10 in the latest D3hoops.com poll, used a balanced attack to secure the victory.
Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Mineral Point) led the way with 12 points as eight Pointers scored at least six points in the contest.
Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) (Luck) added 11 in just 17 minutes of play while
Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) (DeForest) and
Ashley Baker (Vesper/Pittsville) (Vesper) each added five rebounds. The Pointers shot 53 percent from the field and forced 20 Falcon turnovers.
The Falcons (8-5, 2-3 WIAC) were led by Taylor House who scored 13 points and recorded four steals. Tess Lardie chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds in the defeat.
Up next, the Pointers will travel to Platteville to take on the Pioneers of UW-Platteville in WIAC action Saturday, Jan. 10 at 5:00 p.m.
