Pointers Escape River Falls with Victory

Box Score

RIVER FALLS - It took overtime, but the Pointers escaped UW-River Falls with a victory, posting a 94-87 win over the Falcons in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's basketball action Wednesday evening.

The Pointers jumped out to an early 12 point lead, thanks in part to the hot shooting of Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee), who connected on four three-point baskets in the game's first eight minutes, pulling away 24-12. The Falcons battled back, cutting their deficit to three with 1:36 remaining, but Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Wisconsin Rapids) and Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (Fond du Lac) combined for seven points to push UWSP lead back to 10 heading into the break.

Early in the second half, a three-pointer by Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Minocqua) gave UWSP their largest lead of the game (13) with just over 18:42 remaining. From there, the Falcons used a 19-4 run to take their first lead since the game's opening minutes, 55-53.

After a few minutes of trading baskets, the Pointers managed to pull ahead by six (75-69) with just over 1:20 remaining. But the Falcons came fighting back, as the Pointers missed the front end of a pair of one-and-one's, in the final minute, allowing the Falcons to tie the game at 75 with :41 remaining. But UW-River Falls missed a lay-up as time ran out, sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Pointers controlled the tempo, as Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee) hit several big shots down the stretch as the Pointers held on for the 94-87 victory.

Leading the way for UWSP was Beamish, who posted 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting including three three-pointers. El-Amin added 19 while Rortvedt and Jenkins each added 15.

For UW-River Falls, all five starters scored in double figures in the losing effort, with Jontae Koonkaew leading the way with 15.

The Pointers held the Falcons to just 46 percent shooting from the floor but the River Falls capitalized on their free-throws, converting 11 of their 13 attempts. UW-Stevens Point shot just under 54 percent from the floor including 11-for-25 from three-point land.

UW-Stevens Point (10-2, 4-0 WIAC) returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 10 when they travel to UW-Platteville for a showdown with the league-leading Pioneers. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
