Falcons Fly Past Pointers 3-2

STEVENS POINT – UW-River Falls used a goal in the final minute of the second and a shorthanded goal in the first five minutes of the third to take a two goal lead and hold on to defeat the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point in Northern Collegiate Athletic (NCHA) women's hockey action at Ice Hawks Arena.

The win puts the Falcons back in front in the race for the league's top spot, as River Falls holds the first tiebreaker, NCHA wins.

The Falcons struck first at the 6:25 mark when Stefanie Schmitz tallied the opening goal on a power play, giving River Falls a 1-0 lead. Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Plainfield, Ill.) answered back for the Pointers at the 9:48 mark, scoring off a Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) (Antigo) and Rachel Graves (Bemidji, Minn.) assist, on the power play, knotting the score at 1-1 after one period.

In the second, Abby Sunderman tallied the second goal of the game for the visiting Falcons at the 19:31 mark, as the Falcons took a 2-1 lead into the game's final period.

At the 5:04 mark of the third, the Falcons struck again, this time shorthanded, as Emma Nordness took a Ally Foley pass and found the back of the net, giving River Falls a 3-1 advantage.

In the game's final minutes, Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Lindstrom, Minn.) scored while the Pointers had an extra attacker on, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2, but it was not enough as the Falcons turned away the Pointers final shots and secured the victory.

UW-Stevens Point falls to 10-3-5 overall, 8-3-3 in the NCHA while River Falls improves to 11-5-2, 9-2-1 in NCHA play. The Pointers return to action next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6-7, when they host UW-Superior.
