Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) (Sherrard, Ill.) netted two goals and added an assist on a goal by
Tracy Butler (Marshfield/Marshfield) (Marshfield) as the Pointers defeated the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire 3-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action Friday evening.
The win gives the Pointers a two point lead in the NCHA over idle UW-River Falls in the race for the No. 1 seed in the league.
After a nearly scoreless first period, Edward scored at the 16:48 mark of the first period, unassisted, to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Butler scored off a
Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Edward assists at the 7:24 mark, giving the Pointers a 2-0 advantage.
In the third, Edward netted her third point of the night on her second goal, this time off a Butler pass to give the Pointers the 3-0 edge at the 17:04 mark. UW-Eau Claire's Kristin Faber (Austin, Minn.) netted the only goal of the night for the Blugolds as time expired to make the final score 3-1.
d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (Swartz Creek, Mich.) tallied 18 saves in goal for the Pointers while UWEC's Morgan Pieper (Williams, Minn.) netted 27 in the loss.
UW-Stevens Point (10-2-5, 8-2-3 NCHA) return to action Saturday, Jan. 31 when they play host to UW-River Falls in a showdown of the NCHA's top two teams. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
