STEVENS POINT - Five of the first seven field goals the Pointers scored on Wednesday evening were from beyond the three-point line, as UW-Stevens Point jumped ahead to an early 18-8 lead and never looked back, defeating the Falcons of UW-River Falls 86-64 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action at the Quandt Fieldhouse.
The Pointers shot 63.3 percent from the floor in the first half, 64.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc as
Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Minocqua) connected on four three-pointers of his own in the half, leading the way for 16 first-half points. After jumping ahead 18-8 in the game's opening minutes, the Pointers closed out the half on an 11-2 run to jump ahead by 17 at the end of the opening stanza.
In the second half, River Falls (9-9, 3-6 WIAC) cut the deficit to 12 with 12:44 remaining, but the Pointers pulled away with a 14-3 run, capped off by a lay-up from
Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee) as the pointers pushed their lead to 23 points with just over seven minutes left and coasted to the 22-point victory.
Leading the way for the Pointers was Rortvedt, who added two points in the second half to finish with 18. He also collected a game-high seven rebounds.
Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (Fond du Lac) and
Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Wisconsin Rapids) each tallied 16 points in the victory while Jenkins and
Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee) each added nine. El-Amin also had a team-high six assists.
For River Falls, Jontae Koonkaew led the way with 16 points while Colin Utke added 14. The Falcons also received 10 points each from Jake Voeltz and Wade Guerin.
UW-Stevens Point (17-2, 10-0 WIAC) has the weekend off before returning to action next Wednesday, Feb. 4 at UW-Stout in Menomonie. Game time is schedule for 7 p.m.
