Pointers Surge Past Titans

STEVENS POINT – UW-Stevens Point had four players score in double figures, including a team-high 19 from Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Portage) as the Pointers held of the Titans of UW-Oshkosh and 33 points from D.J. Marsh, for an 80-70 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to build more than a four point cushion until Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Wisconsin Rapids) rattled off five straight points for the Pointers, as UWSP pulled ahead to a 21-16 lead. After back-to-back Khalifa El'Amin (Milwaukee) three-point baskets gave the Pointers a nine-point lead, 27-18, with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half. The titans closed out the first half 23-12 to pull ahead by two, 41-39 at halftime.

But the Pointers answered in the second, going on a 20-2 run, sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (Fond du Lac) and Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Minocqua) as the Pointers continued to build their lead to 17, 69-52, with 7:45 remaining.

Marsh kept the Titans close, twice cutting the deficit to nine three times, but the Pointers answered with clutch Moses and El-Amin baskets down the stretch to secure the 10-point victory.

UW-Stevens Point committed just three turnovers in the game, while forcing nine by the Titans. The Pointers shot 50 percent from the floor for the game and 47.6 percent from three-point land.

Moses finished the game with 17 points, El-Amin added 15 points and seven assists while Rortvedt added 13 and had a team-high eight rebounds. Nick Krull (Marshall/Marshall) (Marshall) and Beamish each added eight points to round out the scoring for Stevens Point.

Marsh pulled down eight rebounds and two assists to his season-best 33-point performance while Dane SeckarAnderson chipped in 16 in the loss. Matt Miller added eight, reaching the 1,000 career point mark, becoming the 27th player in UW-Oshkosh history to reach the mark.

The Pointers improve to 15-2 overall and 9-0 in the WIAC and stretch their winning streak to seven. The Titans fall to 10-8 overall, 4-5 in the WIAC. The Pointers return to action on Monday, Jan. 26 when they host Viterbo in their final non-conference game of the season at 7 p.m.
