Beamish Tallies 19 as Pointers Shoot Past Blugolds

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team improved to 14-2 overall and remained a perfect 8-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) on Wednesday night, handing the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire an 80-60 defeat at Zorn Arena.

Close for the first few minutes of the first half, the Pointers used a 13-2 run to pull ahead 20-8 with 10 minutes left and continued to build a lead. The Pointers led by as many as 14, 43-29, with 10 seconds remaining and took a 12-point lead into halftime, 43-31.

In the second half, Eau Claire cut the deficit to 11, 45-34 with 18:22 remaining, but UW-Stevens Point answered right back, building their largest lead of the game, 22 points with 14:18 to go and held the Blugolds at bay, cruising to the 20-point conference victory.

Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Wisconsin Rapids) led the way for Stevens Point, pouring in 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point land. He also finished as the team's leading rebounder, pulling in five boards. Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Minocqua) added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists on the evening for the Pointers.

For Eau Claire, three players scored in double figures, led by Ryan Shea, who tallied 18. Dan Beyer added 13 and Josh Prince chipped in 10.

UW-Stevens Point will put their conference unbeaten streak on the line next on Saturday, Jan. 24 when the Pointers host the Titans of UW-Oshkosh at 3 p.m. in Quandt Fieldhouse. UW-Eau Claire falls to 9-7 overall, 3-5 in WIAC play.
