Pointers Battle to 2-2 Tie with Blugolds

EAU CLAIRE – UW-Stevens Point overcame a 1-0 deficit after the first period to take a 2-1 lead in the second, only to see UW-Eau Claire tie the score at the start of the third period, force overtime and force a 2-2 tie with the seventh-ranked Pointers in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association women's hockey action Saturday afternoon.

Eau Claire got on the board first, as Kristin Faber tallied a power play goal at the 5:49 mark of the first half, as the Blugolds jumped ahead 1-0.

UW-Stevens Point answered back in the second, as Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Lindstrom, Minn.) put the Pointers on the board at the 2:44 mark off an Ariel Novak (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Lindstrom, Minn.) assist to tie the score at 1-1. Just over five minutes later, Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Burnsville, Minn.) tallied her 12th goal of the season off a Grossmann pass, giving the Pointers the 2-1 advantage. d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (Swartz Creek, Mich.) tallied 10 of her 32 saves in the second to keep the 2-1 advantage for the visiting Pointers through two.

Early in the third however, Eau Claire's Faber struck again, scoring her second goal of the game on another Blugold power play, knotting the score at two goals each, just :23 into the period. From there both team was unable to capitalize on two power play opportunities, and for the second night in a row, the two teams went to overtime.

In overtime, both goalkeepers turned away three shots on net, forcing a 2-2 tie after the extra frame.

UW-Stevens Point moves to 7-2-4 overall, 6-2-2 in NCHA play while Eau Claire is now 10-3-3 overall, 5-2-2 in the NCHA. UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 20 when they face St. Olaf at 7 p.m. in Northfield, Minn. UWEC faces Finlandia on Jan. 23-24 in NCHA action next weekend.
