Pointers Skate to Second Straight Tie

EAU CLAIRE - UW-Stevens Point tallied three second period goals and another in the third but UW-Eau Claire tied the game midway through the third period as the Pointers skated to a 4-4 tie in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association men's hockey action Saturday evening.

After skating to a 0-0 first period, the Blugold tallied the game's first goal just :19 into the second, taking the early advantage. UW-Stevens Point answered at the 2:01 mark when Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Madison) scored his fifth goal of the season, tying the game a 1-1. Just :43 later, Eau Claire re-captured the lead, moving ahead 2-1 off a DJ Clark goal. The Pointers responded with two goals of their own, as Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) (Eagle River) and Korey O'Brien (Southgate, MI/Anderson) (Southgate, Mich.) scored, as the Pointers retied and retook the lead, going ahead 3-2 after two periods.

In the third, Eau Claire's Sean Garrity tallied a power play goal to tie the game again at 3-3. Later in the period UWSP's Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI/Novi) (Lanton, Mich.) tallied his second goal of the season, scoring shorthanded and giving the Pointers another edge, 4-3. But just :21 later, Eau Claire scored on another power play opportunity, tying the game for the fourth time, and forcing overtime.

In the extra time, the Pointers and Blugolds came up empty, as the teams skated to deadlock finish.

UW-Stevens Point's Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied 53 saves while his Eau Claire counterpart Tyler Brigl turned away 19 Pointer shots.

The No. 13 Pointers (11-5-2, 2-4-1 NCHA) return to action on Jan. 23 and 24 when they host Lake Forest and St. Norbert in NCHA action at K.B. Willett Arena at 7:30 p.m.
