STEVENS POINT - Trailing 30-28 to UW-Stout at the half, UW-Stevens Point's
Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (Fond du Lac) took control, scoring all of his career, season and game-high 32 points in the second stanza to lead the Pointers over the visiting Blue Devils 78-58 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's basketball action Wednesday evening.
Moses' 32 second-half total was four more than the Blue Devils were able to score in the second frame.
After trading the lead throughout much of the first half, the Blue Devils built a five point lead, 22-17, with 6:12 remaining. The Pointers battled back to take a 23-22 lead, thanks to an
Evan Sweeney (Appleton/West) (Appleton) three-point basket with 4:03 to go. Tied at 28-28 with 1:00 remaining, Stout's Alex Mason connected on a jumper to give the visitors their 30-28 halftime lead.
In the second half, Moses took control, scoring 32 of the team's 50 second-half points as UWSP outscored the Blue Devils 44-19 over the first 16:30 of the second half, pulling ahead by 23 points with 4:31 remaining, as the Pointers cruised to the come-from-behind 20-point victory.
Moses was the only Pointer to score in double figures, going 11-of-15 from the floor including 3-of-5 from three-point land and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee) added eight points and three assists while
Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Minocqua) and
Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee) each added 7 points.
Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Wisconsin Rapids) led the way on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds.
Eric Hostetter led UW-Stout with 18 points including four three-pointers while Mahlon Thomas added 11 and John Donald added 10 in the loss.
The fourth-ranked Pointers (12-2, 6-0 WIAC) return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17 when they face the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior in a 3 p.m. match-up in Superior.
