SAINT PETER, Minn. - The seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team held 1-0 and 2-1 leads on Tuesday evening but allowed two Gustavus Adolphus power play goals as the Pointers skated to a 2-2 tie with the No. 1 ranked Golden Gusties in non-conference action in Saint Peter, Minn.
The Pointers took an early 1-0 lead after
Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Plainfield, Ill.) scored just 4:24 into the game off a
Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn.) assist. The Pointers held that lead until late in the first period when Christine Wicker scored for the Gusties on a power play, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Pointers jumped ahead again in the second at the 11:44 mark, as Nelson found the net off a Sosnowski assist to take the 2-1 lead. Later in the period, the Golden Gusties capitalized on a double-minor by the Pointers to score with 1:05 remaining in the period, knotting the game at 2-2.
In the third and overtime periods, neither team was able to score as both keepers turned away shots to force the tie. UW-Stevens Point's
d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (Swartz Creek, Mich.) posted 33 saves including 11 in the third and five in overtime while Danielle Justice turned away 24 for the Golden Gusties.
UW-Stevens Point (7-1-3) returns to action this weekend when they travel to UW-Eau Claire for a weekend series with the Bluegold. Gustavus has a weekend series scheduled with the University of St. Thomas. The two teams will face again on Feb. 17 in Stevens Point.
