Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) (Brookfield/East), Vicki Bieschke (Oconomowoc/Waukesha Memorial) (Oconomowoc/Waukesha Memorial) and
Emily Walsh (Waunakee/Waunakee) (Waunakee) each tallied goals as the Pointers defeated Gustavus Adolphus 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pointers had several changes early, but a stiff Gustavus defense held off the Pointers until Walsh put UWSP on the board 16:10 into the game, off an assist from
Meghan Mausbach (Sr., Minocqua/Lakeland) and
Jackie Spees (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Sr., Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln).
Bieschke tallied the Pointers' second goal of the game with just under a minute remaining in the half, taking a
Mary Jean Cornelius (West Bend/West) (So., West Bend/West) pass and finding the back of the net, giving the Pointers a 2-0 advantage.
Gustavus came out firing in the second half, and eight minutes in, Ashley Anderson (So., Corcoran, Minn./Rockford) netted an unassisted goal, cutting the Pointer lead to 2-1.
As the game progressed, the UWSP defense shut down the Gustavus offense and Pointer netminder Pam Lucklow (Sr., Kaukauna) made two of her three saves to hold the lead. Weise put the game out of reach with just under two minutes remaining. giving the pointers the 3-1 advantage.
Gustavus goalkeeper Chelsea Bayer (So., Rogers, Minn.) tallied 14 saves in the loss. UWSP's Lucklow faced just five shots five shots, recording three saves and earned her second victory of the season.
UWSP improves to 2-1 on the season while Gustavus falls to 1-1. The Pointers will next face St. Norbert on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. Gustavus will next face Luther College at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10.
