WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The 23rd-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team used a six-run sixth inning as it rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat No. 8 UW-Whitewater 7-5 in the nightcap of the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament at Witter Field.

The Pointers are now 27-14 overall and will await the winner of UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater in the championship game. The Warhawks fall to 34-7 overall. It was the first time this season the Pointers have won when trailing after five innings and when they have been out-hit.

In the top of the second, Whitewater loaded the bases thanks to three hit batters, but the Pointers got out of the jam by inducing a fly out to right field. However, the Warhawks got on the board in the top of the fourth when a run came across on a groundout to make it 1-0.

Whitewater made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth on a leadoff home run over the left center field fence. The Pointers, who were still hitless entering the bottom of the fifth, got their first hit and run on one swing of the bat when Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) left the building with a solo shot to cut the lead in half 2-1.

The Pointers kept that momentum going in the bottom of the sixth as they tied it up on a groundout. Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) then hit a texas-leaguer over the second baseman's head to make it 3-2. Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) (Sr.-Oconomowoc) followed with a three-run home run to make it 6-2. Stevens Point was not done yet as Ben Warwick (Green Bay/Bay Port) (Sr.-Green Bay/Bay Port) went back-to-back with a shot to center as the Pointers led 7-2.

The Warhawks got right back into the game in the top of the seventh with three runs in the inning to make it 7-5. That's as close as they would get as Jeff Zielke (Watertown/Watertown) (Jr.-Watertown) tied a program record with his seventh save of the season to give the Pointers the 7-5 win.

Travis Kempf (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) (Sr.-Kewaskum) improved to 6-0 as he struck out three and scattered five hits. Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Stevens Point offense.

The Pointers will look for their fourth consecutive WIAC Tournament title tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Witter Field.
