EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Stevens Point men's track and field team had a strong second day as it climbed from fourth place after day one to finish second today with 137.5 points at the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eau Claire.
The Pointers finished behind UW-La Crosse who its 18th consecutive conference championship. The Eagles totaled up 191.5 points. UW-Oshkosh was third with 134.5 points and UW-Whitewater was fourth with 129 points. Rounding out the top five was UW-Platteville with 87 points. The last time the Pointers finished second was 2002.
Kyle Steiner (Grafton/Grafton) (Sr.-Grafton) won the decathlon championship for the second consecutive year with a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark and a facility record of 6,455 points. Steiner also finished third in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.94 meters. Greg Haak (Belleville/Belleville) (Sr.-Belleville) won the 800-meter championship with a time of 1:56.40 seconds.
The 4x100-meter relay team also collected a championship today after it set a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, winning in a time of 41.61 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay team was second in a time of 3:17.61 seconds. Keith Ingram (Milwaukee, WI/Riverside) (Fr.-Milwaukee/Riverside University) won a conference championship in the long jump with a distance of 6.81 meters.
Pat Leonard (Sr.-Chicago, IL/Brother Rice) finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.89 seconds. Leonard also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.96 seconds.
Nick Ver Duin (Sr.-Howards Grove) along with Scott Michel of UW-Oshkosh was named the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete.
The Pointers will compete at the North Central Invite next Friday.
