MOLINE, Ill. – The 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team carried a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, until Webster University put up a seven-spot on the scoreboard to end the Pointers season by a final score of 9-7 this afternoon in the 2008 NCAA Division III Central Regional at Swanson Stadium.
Webster moves on to face Augustana tonight at 7 p.m. The Gorloks have now beaten the top two seeds in the regional and will look to knock off the three seed tonight. This is the first time since 2004 the Pointers will not play in a regional final.
Stevens Point threatened in the top of the first as the Pointers got a runner to third with one out, but came away with nothing on an inning-ending double play. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Gorloks got on the board with a sacrifice fly.
The Pointers answered in the top of the fifth as Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) (Fr.-Kimberly) doubled and then would score on a double steal, crossing the plate before the runner got tagged out between first and second. Stevens Point followed with a three-run top of the sixth. Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown) led off with a double. Later in the inning with runners at the corners, Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander) doubled to score Archambeau and make it 2-1. The next batter, Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) also doubled to drive in two and make it 4-1.
Webster got one run in the bottom of the frame off of a Stevens Point error to cut it to 4-2. However, the Pointers put three more runs on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Archambeau hit a two-run home run to make it 6-2 and then Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) had an RBI double to extend it to 7-2.
After Stevens Point got the first batter out in the bottom of the seventh, the Gorloks hit a single and a double to put runners at second and third. After a pitching change, Webster had another double to drive in two and cut the lead to 7-4. After Webster loaded the bases, the Pointers got the second out of the inning. However, Webster got another run after a hit batter forced a run across and made it 7-5. Another double drove in two to tie the score 7-7. The Gorloks then took the lead on a two-run single to make it 9-7.
The Pointers got one base runner on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not bring them around to score as Webster eliminated the Pointers by a score of 9-7.
In his final game as a Pointer, Doug Coe (Appleton/North) went 4-for-5 with a RBI to lead the Stevens Point offense.
The Pointers end with an overall record of 29-16. Stevens Point will have to say goodbye to 10 seniors and the winningest class in the program history with an overall record of 136-62. The class won four straight WIAC Tournament titles and two NCAA Regional Championships. The class made back-to-back World Series appearances, including a third-place finish last season, the highest in school history.
