STEVENS POINT – Senior pitcher Hope Krause (Mishicot/Mishicot) (Sr.-Mishicot) threw her second no-hitter of the season in game two today as the 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point softball team swept Finlandia University, winning game one 7-2 and game two 8-0 in six innings at McCarty Memorial Field.
Krause (5-2) had six strikeouts and walked two batters in six innings of work in the second game of the doubleheader. Krause's no-hitter is the 16th in school history and she becomes the fifth Pointer to throw multiple no-hitters in a season. Krause's first no-hitter this year came against Concordia-Moorhead also in the second game of a doubleheader.
Stevens Point gave Krause enough runs so she wouldn't have the pitch the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the first, Laura Van Abel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) (Sr.-Kaukauna) reached on a bunt single and then scored all the way from first after a Finlandia error. In the second inning Van Abel struck again with a two-run home run, her first of the season, to make the score 3-0. Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH) (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) homered to leadoff the third inning to extend the Pointer lead to 4-0.
Stevens Point would end the game in the bottom of the sixth. With runners at first and second and one out Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) (Sr.-Sun Prairie) hit a RBI single. Adri Amelianovich (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) (Fr.-Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) followed that with a RBI single to make the score 6-0. A Lions error allowed another Pointer to score and then Kim Liegel (Fr.-Madison/LaFollette) hit a RBI single to left field to end the game by way of the eight-run rule 8-0 in six innings.
Laura Van Abel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna), Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH), and Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) all had two hits to lead the Pointers at the plate.
In game one, Stevens Point got out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning when Samantha Bizeau (Gladstone, MI/Gladstone) (Fr.-Gladstone, MI) tripled to centerfield, allowing two to score. Bizeau then scored on a groundout. A Finlandia error allowed another Pointer to score in the third to extend the Pointer lead to 4-0.
The Lions got one run in the top of the fourth, but the Pointers responded with three in the bottom frame. A fielders' choice and a ground out allowed two runs to come in and a RBI infield single by Mallory Martens (Green Bay/Preble) (Fr.-Green Bay/Preble) made the score 7-1. The Lions got one run in the top of the sixth, but the Pointers prevailed 7-2.
Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) (So.-Ashwaubenon) (9-2) went five innings, struck out seven and allowed just three hits to earn the victory. Laura Van Abel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) and Danielle Ashbeck (Wabeno/Wabeno) (Sr.-Wabeno) each had two hits to lead Stevens Point at the plate.
The Pointers are now 15-5 overall this season. This was the first-ever meeting between Stevens Point and Finlandia.
The Pointers will play their third doubleheader in three days tomorrow when they travel to face Lawrence University. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
