UWSP Drops Two to Whitewater

STEVENS POINT – The 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point softball team hosted UW-Whitewater today at McCarty Field due to wet field conditions down in Whitewater, but the home field advantage was no help as the Pointers lost game one 8-0 in six innings and game two 5-4.

The Pointers drop to an overall record of 13-5 and 1-3 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action. The Warhawks improve to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

In game one, the Pointers could only manage four hits, while the Warhawks punched out 13 hits. Whitewater hit a home run and got a RBI single in the first to take an early 3-0 lead. They scored two more runs in the second to make the score 5-0. The score remained 5-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Warhawks hit a three-run home run to end the game by a score of 8-0 in six innings.

Laura Van Abel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) (Sr.-Kaukauna) was 2-for-3 at the plate for Stevens Point. Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) (So.-Ashwaubenon) (8-2) picked up the loss for the Pointers.

The Warhawks jumped out to a five-run lead in game two after scoring two runs in the first and second innings and getting another in the third. Stevens Point got on the board in the fourth when Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH) (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 5-2. Then in the fifth, Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) (Sr.-Sun Prairie) hit a two-run blast to cut the Whitewater lead to 5-4. In the top of the seventh, the Pointers got a two-out double from Danielle Ashbeck (Wabeno/Wabeno) (Sr.-Wabeno), however Stevens Point flied out to end the game as Whitewater won 5-4.

The Pointers only got five hits in game two. Hope Krause (Mishicot/Mishicot) (Sr.-Mishicot) (4-2) received the loss for the Pointers.

The Pointers will host Finlandia University tomorrow at McCarty Field. It will be Family Day at the ballpark as the first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
