MENOMONIE – UW-Stevens Point Head Baseball Coach Pat Bloom became the winningest coach in Pointers baseball history as the 24th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team scored a combined 42 runs in the two games to sweep UW-Stout today at Nelson Field.

Bloom in just his fifth season has a record of 155-72. Jim Clark, who coached the Pointers in the 1960s and 70s for 12 seasons, held the top spot with 153 wins. Bloom has guided the Pointers to back-to-back World Series appearances and the two highest finishes in school history the last two seasons.

Just like yesterday, the Pointers scored a lot of runs in game one of the doubleheader, but today they scored even more in the second game. In game one, Stevens Point scored eight in the top of the second as Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) (Fr.-Custer/SPASH) and Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown) had back-to-back RBI doubles. Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) followed with a RBI single to make it 4-0. The Pointers added four more unearned runs in the inning to make it 8-0.

The Pointers followed that inning with a four-run top of the third as Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander) drove in two runs with a single and then two more runs scored on a wild pitch and a walk with the bases loaded to make it 12-0. Sam Spurney (Manitowoc/Manitowoc Lincoln) (So.-Manitowoc/Lincoln) had a sacrifice fly in the sixth and pitcher Travis Kempf (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) (Sr.-Kewaskum) had a RBI single in his first official at-bat as a Pointer in the seventh. Spurney then added a three-run home run to make the final score 17-0.

Mike Thrun (Franklin/Franklin) (Sr.-Franklin) went the distance as he blanked the Blue Devils, striking out a season-high 10 batters and allowing just six hits. Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) was 3-for-4 to lead the Stevens Point offense.

The Pointers kept their foot on the gas in game two as they pounded out a season-high 25 runs on 21 hits in a 25-5 thrashing of the Blue Devils.

Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) hit a grand slam in the top of the first and Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) (Sr.-Sturgeon Bay) had two-run double as the Pointers had a 7-0 lead with Stout yet to bat. The Blue Devils got their first run of the day in the bottom of the first, but Stevens Point added six more runs in the second. The Pointers scored three runs off of Stout errors and Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) (Fr.-Kimberly) had a two-run single in the inning as it was 13-1.

After Stout got two runs in the bottom of the second, Steve Considine (Portage/Portage) (So.-Portage) drove in two in the top of the third to make the score 15-3. It was another seven-run inning in the third as Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) hit a three-run home run and Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) had a solo shot in the inning to make it 22-3.

Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) led off the fifth inning with a home run and the Pointers added two more runs in the seventh to make the final count 25-5. The 25 runs are tied for the third-most in school history with 27 being the record. It is the most runs scored in a doubleheader since the Pointers put up 41 runs in two games against UW-Superior in 2004.

Garrett Nix (Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) (Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) got the win on the mound as he went six innings and struck out eight to improve to 7-2 this season. Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) was 4-for-5 with a home run. Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) was 3-for-3 with five RBIs and Doug Coe (Appleton/North) was 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Stevens Point is now 23-10 overall and 15-5 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. The Blue Devils drop to 12-25 overall and 4-20 in the WIAC.

The Pointers were scheduled to have a doubleheader against Ripon College tomorrow, but that has been postponed and a make up date is to be determined. The Pointers will face Edgewood College Wednesday night in Madison for a single game starting at 7 p.m.
