EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Stevens Point softball team took two games from UW-Superior today winning game one 7-5 and game two 10-3 at Hobbs Field in Eau Claire.

The two wins give the Pointers a 23-9 overall record and an 8-6 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record. The Yellowjackets fall to 13-21 overall and 2-12 in the conference.

The Pointers got things started right away in the top of the first as Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) (Sr.-Sun Prairie) hit a grand slam to right field for her team-high eighth home run of the season, one shy of the school record for most home runs in a year. The Yellowjackets answered with a three-run home run to left in the bottom of the first to make the score 4-3.

Stevens Point got all three of those runs back in the top of the second as Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH) (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) hit a two-RBI single to center and then she later scored on a double steal attempt to make it 7-3. Superior cut the lead to 7-5 with a pair runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Pointers pitcher Hope Krause (Mishicot/Mishicot) (Sr.-Mishicot) held it from there as the final score would be 7-5. Krause (7-5) picked up the complete game win as she struck out three. Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH) was 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Stevens Point offense.

In game two, Laura Van Abel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) (Sr.-Kaukauna) led off the game with a home run to center, her fourth of the season and her 14th of her career, to break the school record for most home runs in a career. The very next batter Kim Liegel (Fr.-Madison/LaFollette) hit her first collegiate home run to dead center to make it 2-0. Later in the inning Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) hit a RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0 after one inning.

Then in the second, Liegel hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to make it 5-0. After a wild pitch made it 6-0, Danielle Ashbeck (Wabeno/Wabeno) (Sr.-Wabeno) hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 7-0. The Yellowjackets scored a pair of runs in the second and then added a solo home run in the third to make it 7-3.

The Pointers added three more runs in the top of the sixth as Niki Schomer (Marinette/Marinette) (Sr.-Marinette) scored on a Superior error and Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) hit a two-run single to center to make it 10-3. There would be no more scoring the rest of the way as the Pointers completed the sweep 10-3.

Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) (So.-Ashwaubenon) (14-3) got the win for the Pointers as she went five innings and struck out seven. Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Stevens Point at the plate.

The Pointers will conclude their regular season on Tuesday when they travel to Oshkosh for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
