MENOMONIE – The 24th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team dominated game one by a score of 17-1, but fell in game two by a final count of 9-4 to UW-Stout today at Nelson Field.
The split gives the Pointers an overall record of 21-10 and a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record of 13-5. The Blue Devils are now 12-23 overall and 4-18 in the conference. The one win by the Pointers gave Head Coach Pat Bloom his 153rd career victory, which ties the school record for most wins by a Pointer baseball coach that was held by Jim Clark.
It was all Stevens Point in game one. The Pointers scored four runs in the top of the first thanks to a Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) (Sr.-Oconomowoc) two-run double and a Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown) RBI single. With the bases loaded in the third, Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) (Sr.-Sturgeon Bay) hit a single to left that drove in two to make it 6-0.
With the score now 9-1 in the fifth, Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) (Sr.-Chippewa Falls/McDonell) hit his second double of the day that scored two to extend the lead to 11-1. Stevens Point added two more runs in the inning to make it 13-1. Then in the seventh inning Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) (Fr.-Kimberly) hit a grand slam to left field to make the final score 17-1. The 17 runs are tied for the most scored in a game this season by the Pointers.
Travis Kempf (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) (Sr.-Kewaskum) improved to 5-0 this season. He struck out six and scattered seven hits in seven innings of work. Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Pointers.
Stevens Point took the lead in game two in the top of the third as Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) scored on a passed ball and then Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) hit a two-run double to make the score 3-0. However, the Blue Devils then scored at least a run in the next five innings.
Stout scored one run in the third, fourth, and fifth to tie it 3-3. The Blue Devils then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as they got three runs in the inning to make the score 6-3. Stout scored three more runs in the seventh, including a two-run home run to extend the lead to 9-3. Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) homered in the eighth for the Pointers, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Devils took the nightcap 9-4.
Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) struck out eight in five innings in the no decision. Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Pointers' offense.
The Pointers will complete their four-game series with the Blue Devils tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
