Game 1 Box
Game 2 Box

STEVENS POINT – Senior Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth of game one to break a 3-3 tie as the 22nd-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team defeated UW-Platteville 6-3 and then had no trouble in game two winning 13-0 in seven innings on Senior Day at University Field.

The Pointers improve to 17-8 overall and 9-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pioneers drop to 12-14 overall and 5-7 in the conference. The Pointers honored their 11 senior baseball players today as this senior class is the winningest in UW-Stevens Point baseball history with 124 wins over the past four seasons.

Platteville struck first in game one with a RBI single up the middle in the top of the second. That lead didn't last long as in the bottom frame Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) (Fr.-Kimberly) hit a two-run home run over the left field fence. In the bottom of the fourth, Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) hit his team-high eighth home run of the year, a no-doubter to left field to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Pioneers responded with a pair of RBI singles in the sixth and seventh to tie it up 3-3. After Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) (Fr.-Custer/SPASH) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth, Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger), who tried to lay down a bunt attempt earlier in the at-bat, drilled a two-run home run to right field to give Stevens Point a 5-3 lead.
Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) had a RBI single later in the inning to make the score 6-3. Jeff Zielke (Watertown/Watertown) (Jr.-Watertown) came in the ninth and shut the door, sitting the Pioneers down in order as the Pointers won game one 6-3.

Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Fr.-Baraboo) (2-1) got the win in relief. Travis Kempf (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) (Sr.-Kewaskum) struck out four and allowed just five hits in the no decision. Zielke earns his sixth save of the year, one shy of tying the school record for the most saves in a season. Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Stevens Point offense.

Senior Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) (Sr.-Oconomowoc) tied a school record for most career games played in game two as he was participating in 171st game as a Pointer. The predominately senior lineup in the second game put the contest out of reach early.

With the bases loaded and one out in the second, Joel Hojnacki (Plover/SPASH) (Sr.-Plover/SPASH) and Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown) each drew walks to force in a run. Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander) then hit a bases-clearing double and then scored later on a Doug Coe (Appleton/North) single to give the Pointers a 6-0 lead.

It was a repeat in the third inning as with the bases loaded and one out, Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) walked to score a run. Bushong followed with a two-run single and Doug Coe (Appleton/North) then had a two-run double. The next batter, Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) (Sr.-Chippewa Falls/McDonell), hit a two-run home run to put the Pointers up 13-0.

The Pointers bullpen held down the fort from there as the game ended in seven innings by a final score of 13-0.

Garrett Nix (Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) (Jr.-Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) (5-2) got the win on the mound for the Pointers. The Stevens Point pitching staff allowed a season-low three hits in the game. Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) was 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the Pointers at the plate.

The Pointers will play their final home doubleheader of the season tomorrow when they host the Pioneers once again at University Field. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
