ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's track and field team placed fourth out of nine teams today and Kyle Steiner (Grafton/Grafton) (Sr.-Grafton) posted an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying mark after accumulating 6,637 points in the decathlon at the Meet of Champions hosted by Augustana College.
Steiner won seven of the 10 events and finished no worse than fifth in the other three events. He won the 400-meter, 1,500-meter, 110-meter hurdles, high jump, pole vault, shot put, and hammer throw. He finished second in the discus and long jump. Steiner also dominated this meet last year as he won five of the 10 events.
Other Pointers also had a successful day as there was a meet record broken and four NCAA Division III provisional qualifying marks met. The 4x100-meter relay team set a meet record and met a provisional qualifying mark after winning in a time of 41.33 seconds.
Keith Ingram (Milwaukee, WI/Riverside) (Fr.-Milwaukee/Riverside University) won the 100-meter dash with a provisional qualifying time of 10.72 seconds. Ingram also won the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 21.90 seconds. Greg Haak (Belleville/Belleville) (Sr.-Belleville) also set a provisional qualifying time as he won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:52.98 seconds. The last Pointer to reach a provisional mark was Jerry Prusinsky (So.-Rib Lake) in the hammer throw as he tossed a distance of 174'-7” to place first.
The host, Augustana won the event with a score of 215 points. UW-Whitewater was second with 174.50 points and UW-Oshkosh was third with 171.50 points. The Pointers were fourth with 167 points and UW-Platteville was fifth with 93 points.
The Pointers will take part in the Drake Relays next Thursday-Saturday in Iowa.
