OSHKOSH – The 22nd-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team cranked out seven home runs on the day, but it wasn't enough as the 16th-ranked UW-Oshkosh Titans took both games today, winning game one 3-2 and game two 14-10 at Tiedemann Field.
The two losses drop the Pointers to an overall record of 15-8 and a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record of 7-3. The Titans improve to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in conference play. This doubleheader was a makeup from last week when the two games were postponed twice due to inclement weather.
The Pointers got off to a good start as Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) (Fr.-Custer/SPASH) took the second pitch of the game and hit a solo home run to left to give Stevens Point a 1-0 advantage. Oshkosh tied it up in the third with a two-out RBI single to center. After the Pointers stranded a runner at third in the top of the fifth, the Titans hit a RBI double in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
A pair of Stevens Point errors led to Oshkosh's third run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. The Pointers cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the eighth when Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander) hit a RBI single to score Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH). However, that's as close as they would get as the Titans took game one 3-2.
Mike Thrun (Franklin/Franklin) (Sr.-Franklin) (2-2) struck out four in the loss for the Pointers. Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) and Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) each went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead Stevens Point at the plate.
Oshkosh jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game two after two innings. In the top of the third, the Pointers got a solo home run from Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown) and a two-run shot from Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) to cut the lead to 6-3. The Titans got those three runs back in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-3.
Sam Spurney (Manitowoc/Manitowoc Lincoln) (So.-Manitowoc/Lincoln) hit a solo home run to begin the fifth inning. Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) then hit a two-run home run to make the score 9-6. The Pointers hit their third home run of the inning when Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) hit the second of back-to-back home runs to cut it to 9-7.
However, the Titans scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 14-7. After the Pointers got two runs in eighth, Sam Spurney (Manitowoc/Manitowoc Lincoln) hit his second home run of the day against his former school to give Stevens Point six home runs for the game. The Titans would prevail, however, by a score of 14-10.
The Pointers used five pitchers in the loss. Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Fr.-Baraboo) had the longest outing as he struck out five in four innings. Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) and Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) each had three hits to lead the Pointers at the plate.
The Pointers will be at home for the final time this weekend then they host UW-Platteville for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at University Field. The games will start at noon each day.
