STEVENS POINT – UW-Stevens Point softball coach Ann Munzenmaier recorded her 100th career win today after the 25th-ranked Pointers swept UW-Stout, winning game one 10-2 in five innings and 3-2 in game two at McCarty Field.
Munzenmaier, in just her fourth season, becomes the third Stevens Point coach to achieve 100 career victories. Munzenmaier currently has the second-highest winning percentage in Pointers history at 100-46-1 (.684) and has the highest winning percentage of any current coach in the conference, who has coached more than one season.
Stevens Point got off to a fast start in game one as the Pointers got a pair of RBI singles and scored on a Blue Devil error to take an early 3-0 lead. In the second inning Laura Van Abel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) (Sr.-Kaukauna) hit a solo home run into the gusty winds to make the score 4-0. An infield single allowed another Pointer to score in the third to extend the lead to 5-0.
After Stout got a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, Stevens Point responded when Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) (Sr.-Sun Prairie) hit a three-run home run that just stayed fair down the left field line to make the score 8-2. Back-to-back singles followed to put runners at second and third with two outs. Samantha Bizeau (Gladstone, MI/Gladstone) (Fr.-Gladstone, MI) then ripped a single to center that allowed both runners to score and end the game in five innings 10-2.
Hope Krause (Mishicot/Mishicot) (Sr.-Mishicot) (6-2) got the win on the mound as she struck out six and allowed no earned runs in five innings. Five different Pointers had two hits as Stevens Point had 12 hits for the game.
The Blue Devils took the lead in the game two after a push bunt got past the charging infield to allow the runner to score all the way from second. The Pointers got runners in scoring position in the first three innings, but could not get a runner across the plate.
Stout took a two-run lead in the fourth on a RBI single to center. Stevens Point finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame when Chelsea McIlquham (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) hit a single up the middle and Kim Liegel (Fr.-Madison/LaFollette) scored from second, just beating the throw home to cut the lead to 2-1.
Then in the fifth after a leadoff single, Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH) (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) drilled a two-run home run over the left-center field fence to give the Pointers a 3-2 lead. That's all pitcher Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) (So.-Ashwaubenon) needed as with darkness nearing she allowed just one base runner the final two innings to give Stevens Point the 3-2 win.
Kastenmeier (10-2) struck out nine for the complete game victory. The Pointers punched out nine hits in the second game.
The Pointers will be at home again tomorrow when they host UW-River Falls for a doubleheader at McCarty Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
