STEVENS POINT – After a week of postponements, the 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team managed to finally get on the field today and swept a doubleheader from UW-Superior, winning game one 11-1 in seven innings and game two 10-7 at University Field.
The pair of wins extended the Pointers win streak to seven games. Stevens Point has an overall record of 13-6 and a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) mark of 5-1. The Yellowjackets fall to 12-10 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
In the bottom of the first of game one, the Pointers capitalized on a pair of errors by Superior and Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) had a RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead. Stevens Point added to its lead in the bottom of the third by scoring four runs in the frame. Garett Bloom (Tomah/Tomah) (Jr.-Tomah) had a sacrifice fly and Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) (Sr.-Oconomowoc) followed with a run-scoring single. Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander) then doubled in two to make the score 5-0.
Meanwhile on the mound Mike Thrun (Franklin/Franklin) (Sr.-Franklin) was cruising. Thrun struck out six and allowed just three hits in six innings of work. Stevens Point would cut the first game short by scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth. With no one out and two runners on, Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) drilled his team-high fifth home run to straight away center and make the score 8-0. Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) (Sr.-Chippewa Falls/McDonell) followed that with a solo home run to make the score 9-0. The Pointers added two more runs in the inning to make it 11-0.
The Yellowjackets added a run in the seventh, but that is where the game ended as Stevens Point took game one 11-1. Mike Thrun (Franklin/Franklin) (2-1) received the win for the Pointers. Doug Coe (Appleton/North) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, missing a triple for the cycle. Coe extended his hitting streak to 15 games, but he would not get hit in game two to end the streak.
The Pointers jumped out to an early lead in game two as Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) (Fr.-Kimberly) hit a RBI double in the bottom of the first to make the score 1-0. Surman now has a team-high 14-game hitting streak. He struck again in the bottom of the second as he hit his first career triple to right center to allow two to score as part of a four-run inning.
The Yellowjackets got all those runs back in the top of the third with three of the four runs coming on a bases clearing double. Stevens Point extended its lead to 7-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Superior did not go away as it got two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6.
The Pointers got some insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) drilled a three-run home run to left center to make the score 10-6. After that Superior hit a solo home run to leadoff the seventh, but the Pointers bullpen retired the next nine consecutive batters to get the 10-7 victory.
Mitch Kouba (Maribel/Denmark) (Fr.-Maribel/Denmark) (1-1) pitched 2.2 innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory. Jeff Zielke (Watertown/Watertown) (Jr.-Watertown) pitched a perfect ninth to earn his fourth save of the year. Lucas Hoeschele (Baraboo/Baraboo) (So.-Baraboo) struck out four and allowed no hits in two innings of relief. Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly), Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell), and Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) (Sr.-Sturgeon Bay) all had two hits to lead the Pointers at the plate.
The Pointers will play the second doubleheader tomorrow against the Yellowjackets with the first pitch scheduled for noon at University Field.
