Pointers Score Early and Often to Defeat the Lancers

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team scored seven runs in the top of the first on its way to defeating Worcester State 12-4 today at North Port High School.

The win gives the Pointers a 5-4 record, while the Lancers fall to 3-7 overall. It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander) led off the game for Stevens Point with a home run over the right field fence to make the score 1-0. Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) (Sr.-Oconomowoc) followed that with a double to right center and Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) singled to put runners at the corners. Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) then hit a RBI single to knock in Schlosser. A hit batter loaded the bases and Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) (Sr.-Chippewa Falls/McDonell) hit another RBI single to make the score 3-0.

After one out, Ben Warwick (Green Bay/Bay Port) (Sr.-Green Bay/Bay Port) ripped a single to score Coe. Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown) then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) (Fr.-Kimberly) and make the score 5-0. After an infield hit by Bushong loaded the bases, Schlosser hit a two-RBI double to left center to give the Pointers a 7-0 advantage.

Stevens Point added three more runs in the top of the sixth as Doug Coe (Appleton/North) had a RBI double and Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) drove in two on a double of his own to make the score 10-0. In the top of the seventh, Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) (Fr.-Custer/SPASH) hit a RBI triple to knock in Sam Spurney (Manitowoc/Manitowoc Lincoln) (So.-Manitowoc/Lincoln). Schlosser then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Fritz and make the score 12-0.

Meanwhile, Garrett Nix (Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) (Jr.-Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) was in cruise control on the mound as he allowed just two hits in the first six innings. Nix got into a little trouble in the bottom of the seventh as he gave up two runs to make the score 12-2. The Lancers got two more runs in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score 12-4.

Nix went eight innings striking out eight, while allowing just six hits and two runs to earn his second win of the season. Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Pointers at the plate. Bushong and Coe also had three hits for Stevens Point.

The Pointers will end their Florida trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against 15th-ranked Otterbein College (OH). Action begins at 9 a.m. local time.
