Pointers Win Third Place Game over Foresters

SUPERIOR – The fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team defeated Lake Forest College 4-0 this afternoon in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) O'Brien Cup Tournament third place game at Wessman Arena in Superior.

The Pointers dominated the puck for much of the game. Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) got Stevens Point on the scoreboard with a power play goal at the 11:17-mark of the first period. Rachael Graves (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji) (Jr.-Bemidji, MN) and Lauren Kellin (Grand Rapids, MN/Grand Rapids) (Sr.-Grand Rapids, MN) had the assists. The Pointers outshot the Foresters 11-5 in the opening period.

Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) (So.-Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's, MN) scored 3:38 seconds into the second period to extend the Stevens Point lead to 2-0. Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) (Jr.-Antigo) had the assist. Edward then scored again with under 13 minutes left in the second period to make the score 3-0. Piskula and Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) (Jr.-St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) assisted the goal. The Pointers had a 20-6 shot advantage in the period.

Stevens Point added its final goal of the game with a minute left in the third period when Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Jr.-Plainfield, IL/Central) scored a short-handed goal to make the final score 4-0. Piskula had her third assist of the game on the goal.

The Pointers outshot Lake Forest 40-17 in the game. The Foresters were 0-for-7 on the power play, while the Pointers were 1-for-5.

d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (So.-Swartz Creek, MI) had 17 saves to earn the victory and improves to 9-1-1. Alyssa Wintermute had 36 saves in the loss for the Foresters.

The Pointers will now have to wait to see if they will get an at-large selection to NCAA Division III Women's Hockey Tournament. They have an overall record of 22-3-2 and were ranked first in the west region in the last regional rankings. The winner of the NCHA Tournament does not get the automatic-bid. The selections will be announced Sunday, March 9th.
