Pointers Top the Presidents 16-7

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – On a windy day, the 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team belted three home runs on its way to a 16-7 victory over Washington & Jefferson (PA) today at Desguin Field.

The victory gives the Pointers a 4-4 overall record and a 3-3 record in Florida. Washington & Jefferson is now 4-3 overall. It was the first win against Washington & Jefferson for Stevens Point, who is now 1-2 against the Presidents.

The Pointers scored first in the bottom of the second when Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) (Fr.-Kimberly) hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left center. The Presidents quickly tied it up in the top of third with a leadoff home run. They later scored in the inning on a wild pitch to make the score 2-2.

Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander) led off the bottom of the third with a home run. Surman then hit a RBI single through the left side to drive in Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) and extend the Pointer lead to 4-2. Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) (Sr.-Chippewa Falls/McDonell) followed that with a RBI single up the middle to score Surman and make the score 5-2.

Stevens Point added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) (Sr.-Oconomowoc) hit a two-run single and Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) hit a RBI single to give the Pointers an 8-2 advantage. Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown) hit a two-run home run in the fifth to make the score 10-2.


The Pointers then had back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh. A pair of RBI doubles and a sacrifice fly was the scoring in the sixth. In the eighth with the bases loaded Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) (Sr.-Sturgeon Bay) hit a bases clearing double as the Pointers won easily 16-7.

Lucas Hoeschele (Baraboo/Baraboo) (So.-Baraboo) earned the win on the mound as he went 6.1 innings and struck out two and gave up four hits. Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) was 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) was 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Stevens Point at the plate.

The Pointers will face Worcester State tomorrow morning. The game is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
