Pointers Drop two to Second-ranked Wooster

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team dropped two close games to the second-ranked College of Wooster Monday losing game one in extra innings 11-9 and giving up four runs in the seventh to lose game two 8-7.

The pair of losses drops the Pointers to a record of 3-4 overall. The Scots improve to 11-1 overall. Stevens Point is now 1-6 all-time against Wooster.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Scots got off to a quick start, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Three of the runs scored in the inning were unearned. The Pointers got two runs in the bottom of the first when Sam Spurney (Manitowoc/Manitowoc Lincoln) (So.-Manitowoc/Lincoln) hit a two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs to make the score 4-2.

Stevens Point got one more run in the bottom of the second when Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown) hit a RBI double to drive in Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander). The Pointers kept it going in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to take a 7-4 lead. Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) (Sr.-Sturgeon Bay) hit a two-run double and Archambeau hit a RBI single and Bushong also scored on the play due to an error. Stevens Point added another run in the fourth to make the score 8-4.

After giving up four runs in the first, Pointers pitcher Mike Thrun (Franklin/Franklin) (Sr.-Franklin) had shut down the Scots, not allowing a hit until the fifth inning. However, in that fifth inning Wooster got a pair of two-RBI hits, both with two outs to tie the game 8-8.

The Pointers had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) reached on an error to begin the inning. After an intentional walk and a strikeout, Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, the Pointers grounded into a double play to end the threat. The Pointers also stranded the bases loaded in the eighth.

In the top of ninth, the Scots broke the tie with an unearned run on a RBI single. Stevens Point responded when Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) hit a RBI double to make the score 9-9 as we went to the 10th. In the 10th, Wooster got the first two runners on base and both came around to score to make it 11-9. The Pointers went down in order in the bottom of the 10th as Wooster escaped with an 11-9 win.

Mitch Kouba (Maribel/Denmark) (Fr.-Maribel/Denmark) got the loss for the Pointers. Jeff Zielke (Watertown/Watertown) (Jr.-Watertown) had solid relief performance, striking out four and allowing three hits in four innings. Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs to lead Stevens Point in batting.

In game two, the Pointers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first on a Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) (Sr.-Chippewa Falls/McDonell) single. Wooster got an unearned run in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-1.The Scots then got two more runs in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI single to give the Scots a 3-2 lead.

Stevens Point got those two runs back in the top of the third when Doug Coe (Appleton/North) hit a two-RBI single. However the Pointers left the bases loaded in the inning. In the top of the fifth, Garett Bloom (Tomah/Tomah) (Jr.-Tomah) drew a walk with the bases loaded to make the score 5-3. Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) then hit a two-RBI single up the middle to make the score 7-3.

Wooster got one run in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-4. Then in the bottom of the seventh, the inning began with a Pointer error. After a fly out, Stevens Point committed another error to put runners at second and third. The Pointers then had three straight walks to force in two runs and make the score 7-6. Wooster then hit a game-winning single to score two runs to make the final 8-7 Wooster.

Brandon Scheidler (Chippewa Falls/McDonell) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Pointers at the plate. Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Fr.-Baraboo) got the loss on the mound.

The Pointers will have a day off Tuesday and will return to action on Wednesday when they will face Washington and Jefferson University. That game is scheduled for 11 a.m. local time.
