Pointers Take Two on First Day in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The 18th-ranked UW-Stevens Point softball team began its Arizona Spring Trip on a rainy and chilly day with a pair of victories over Nazareth and Eastern Connecticut State.

The first game of the day featured the Pointers against Nazareth. It was a pitchers' dual, but the Pointers prevailed by a score of 3-0. Hope Krause (Mishicot/Mishicot) (Sr.-Mishicot) got the win on the mound as struck out 10 and allowed just two hits and three walks. Stevens Point got just six hits in the game, but made them count. The Pointers scored in the first, fourth, and sixth inning to get the 3-0 win. All of Stevens Point's runs came when they got a leadoff single in the inning.

The Pointers then faced Eastern Connecticut State in the second game of the night and won by a score of 6-1. The Pointers' pitching was once again dominant as Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) (So.-Ashwaubenon) had 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits to earn the win. Stevens Point had a little more offense in game two with 10 hits in the game. Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point/SPASH) (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL/Batavia) (Fr.-Batavia, IL) also had a home run in the game. Laura Van Abel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) (Sr.-Kaukauna) went 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.

The Pointers improve to 6-0 this season. It was the first-ever meeting with Nazareth, while the Pointers improve to 4-0 all-time against Eastern Connecticut State.

The Pointers will face Amherst and Lakeland College on Monday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. local time.
