Pointers Get Offensive in Sweep of the Duhawks

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team scored 15 unanswered runs between games one and two as it swept Loras College, winning game one 6-2 and game two 17-6 today at North Charlotte Regional Park.

The two wins put the Pointers back above .500 on the season with a 3-2 record. The Duhawks fall to 3-5 this year. Stevens Point is now 3-0 all-time against Loras.

In game one, the Duhawks would get two runs in the top of the second and had no hits in the inning. The Pointers committed back-to-back errors and a sacrifice fly and a groundout led to the two runs. Stevens Point finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) (Sr.-Slinger) led off the inning with a home run to make the score 2-1. After a Doug Coe (Appleton/North) (Sr.-Appleton/North) drew a walk and a sacrifice moved him over to second, Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) (Fr.-Kimberly) ripped a double to center to score Coe and tie the game 2-2.

Frank stepped to the plate again in the bottom of the fifth and hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Pointers a 4-2 lead. Doug Coe (Appleton/North) then made it back-to-back home runs with a solo blast over the right field wall to make the score 5-2. Stevens Point added insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Ben Warwick (Green Bay/Bay Port) (Sr.-Green Bay/Bay Port) scored on a Loras error to make the final score 6-2.

Travis Kempf (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) (Sr.-Kewaskum) went the distance on the mound, striking out one and scattering seven hits in his first start of the season. Kempf allowed just one base runner past second base after the second inning. Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Pointers at the plate.

Stevens Point kept the momentum going in game two as it scored four runs in the top of the first. Joel Hojnacki (Plover/SPASH) (Sr.-Plover/SPASH) got the scoring started, crossing home plate after an error by the Duhawks. Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) then hit a RBI single down the left field line to plate Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) (So.-Watertown). Tim Schlosser (Oconomowoc/Oconomowoc) (Sr.-Oconomowoc) hit a sacrifice fly and Doug Coe (Appleton/North) scored on another error to give the Pointers a 4-0 advantage.

Justin Bushong (Rhinelander/Rhinelander) (Sr.-Rhinelander) reached on a single to begin the second. An error by the pitcher allowed Bushong to advance all the way to third. He then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0. It was another four-run inning in the top of the third. Stewart Larsen (Sturgeon Bay/Sturgeon Bay) (Sr.-Sturgeon Bay) hit a RBI single to drive in Surman. Bushong then hit a RBI single to score Schlosser. Archambeau completed the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI single to center with two outs to plate Larsen and Bushong to make the score 9-0.

Loras scored three runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Pointer lead to 9-3. After the first two batters got out to begin the top of the fifth, Brad Frank (Slinger/Slinger) hit his third home run of the day with a shot over the left field wall. Doug Coe (Appleton/North) then doubled and Surman hit RBI single through the left side to score Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) (Fr.-Custer/SPASH), who pitch ran for Coe, to make the score 11-3.

All of Stevens Point's scoring in the top of the sixth came when Archambeau hit a three-run home run to make the score 14-3. After the Duhawks got those three runs back in the bottom of the sixth, Garett Bloom (Tomah/Tomah) (Jr.-Tomah) hit a double in the seventh, scoring two and Bushing hit a RBI single to make the final score 17-6. The Pointers scored in every inning except the top of the fourth.

Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) earned the win in his first collegiate start, going five innings and striking out one. Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown) was 3-for-5 with five RBIs to lead the Pointers at the plate.

The Pointers will face second-ranked College of Wooster tomorrow in a doubleheader. The action begins at 8:30 a.m. local time.
